Rediscover a Lost Tradition
with Mella Mead

With just two main ingredients – honey and water, Mella Mead is made in the traditional way dating back 8,000 years.

Our mead is made from fresh Welsh Wildflower Honey produced by the Apis Melifera bees on a local Welsh honey bee farm near our meadery. Unlike commercial Honey Wines or Mead Wines the alcohol content in our mead comes from fermented honey not grapes.

The Ancestor of all Alcoholic Drinks

Probably the oldest alcoholic drink in the world dating back over 8,000 years Mead is enjoying a resurgence in popularity. It’s one of the latest drink trends to make a comeback following the cider, gin and craft beer revivals.

Mead is thought to be first alcoholic beverage known to man, a precursor to wine before grapes were cultivated for fermentation. It’s likely that Mead was accidentally discovered when the rainwater collected at the bottom of bee hives was drunk. The water and fermented honey creating a sweet intoxicating drink which became known as “the nectar of the gods.”

Everyone from the ancient Egypitians, Greek gods, Norse legends, Celtic, Saxon and Viking warriors to Harry Potter has enjoyed the golder nectar that is Mead.

Mead was the drink of the Golden Age and the word for drunk in classical Greek means “honey-intoxicated”.

Following this tradition Mella Mead only contains two main ingredients: honey and water.

A League of its Own

Mead is often misunderstood as it cannot be categorised as a wine, cider or liquor. Although it can be drunk like wine either chilled or at room temperature. It can be enjoyed as an aperitif, to accompany a meal or sweet mead can be served in place of a desert wine. Mead makes a refreshing long drink with a mixer, can be served neat over ice or used in cocktails. (Mead Mojito is one of our favourites)

Mella Mead comes in four varieties: Sweet, Apricot, Raspberry and Blackberry and can be enjoyed like a refreshing fruit cider over ice or in any of the ways described above.
